Swap an exercise mid-session

Someone is on the machine, or your gym does not have the kit. Workout mode can move that one exercise to the end of the session, or replace it with something that trains the same thing.

The important part first

Both of these change only the session you are doing right now. The workout stored in your plan is not rewritten, nothing is locked, and your coach does not rebuild anything because of it. Next time this session comes round it is the original again.

When the machine is busy

  1. Open the options

Tap the dumbbell symbol in the button row of workout mode, then Equipment busy.

  2. Choose to do it later

If the exercise can be moved, tap DO IT LATER. It goes to the end of the working section, before any cool-down, and the next exercise starts immediately with a fresh timer. Every set you have not done yet moves together, with the rest between them, and the sets you have done stay done. An exercise done on each side moves with both sides, and you come back to it from its left side. After its first set, finish the right side before you move the rest.

  3. Or swap it instead

Some exercises cannot be moved. If this one repeats in rounds with other steps, as in a superset or circuit, or there is no later slot for it, the panel says so and offers you a swap. Tap Swap it instead.

When the kit is missing

Under the same dumbbell symbol, tap Equipment missing. Your coach looks for replacements that train the same thing and offers up to three, each with its own sketch and target, and a short note on the first one explaining the choice.

Tap one to swap it in. You stay on the same slot and do the replacement now, the step timer restarts, and anything you had already logged for the original set is dropped.

On an exercise done on each side, the replacement starts from the left side, even if you were already on the right: you do the new exercise now, on both sides. A replacement that is not done one side at a time is a single step.

Try another gets a different set of options, leaving out what you have already been shown.

If it does not work

The panel can only suggest a swap when it can reach your coach. With no signal it says so and offers TRY AGAIN, plus Do it later instead when that is possible for this exercise.

Neither option appears on a rest step, since there is nothing to move or replace. If you would rather just get on with it, close the sheet and press NEXT.

If you have reported a pregnancy, the panel offers no swap, only Do it later where that is possible.

Common questions

Does swapping an exercise change my plan?
No. Both choices apply to the session you are doing right now and nothing else. Your stored workout is not rewritten, next week is untouched, and no rebuild is triggered.
Why can I not move this one later?
Because it repeats in rounds with other steps, as in a superset or circuit, and pulling it out on its own would break up the rounds. The app offers you a swap instead. The same happens when there is no later slot left in the session. On the right side of an exercise done on each side, after its first set, finish that side first and the sets after it can move.
What if I do not like any of the suggested swaps?
Tap Try another and you get a fresh set, leaving out what you have already seen. You can also close the sheet and carry on with the original exercise.
The swap panel says it could not reach my coach.
That is a connection problem, not a problem with the exercise. Tap TRY AGAIN. If you are somewhere with no signal, use Do it later instead where the option is offered, or simply skip past the step.
Where does the postponed exercise go?
To the end of the working part of the session, before any cool-down. The next exercise comes up straight away and you come back to the postponed one near the end. Every set you have not done yet moves together, with the rest between them, and the ones you have done stay done. An exercise done on each side moves with both sides, so even if you postponed it from the right side of its first set, it comes back starting with the left.

Open the app, go to You, and tap the feedback row at the bottom. It reaches a person, not a queue. Or write to hello@smashcoach.app.
