What carries over between endurance racing and HYROX
A HYROX is 8 km of running, split into eight runs of about 1 km with a station after each. In a 2025 study, 11 recreational athletes each completed a simulated Open race alone in a gym. The runs took a median 51.2 of their 86.5 minutes, and the faster finishers were the ones with the higher VO2max, a measure of aerobic capacity, and the bigger endurance training volume. Neither grip strength nor hours of resistance training was linked to their time, and the VO2max link held for the run splits, not the stations. Eleven athletes is a small sample, but it points one way: the engine a marathon or a triathlon builds is the engine a HYROX spends.
It works the other way too. A review of 24 studies in distance runners found that adding strength training improved running economy by 2 to 8% in most of the trials that measured it. Strength training does not cost your marathon; it tends to help it.
| Training for | Carries over | Does not |
|---|---|---|
| A marathon or half | The aerobic engine, economy at a steady pace, the weekly long run | Sled strength, grip, wall balls, running straight off a station |
| A triathlon | The run, and an engine built on the bike and in the pool with less pounding | The same station work; the swim adds least to a HYROX |
| A HYROX | Strength, running economy, running hard on tired legs | Three or more hours of continuous running or racing |
What does not carry over is what makes a HYROX a HYROX: running straight off a sled push, holding two kettlebells for 200 m, and 100 wall balls at the end of it all. That takes station work and compromised running in the weeks before the race, which is why the gap between your two races matters. Fitting HYROX around other sports in general is in hybrid training, and whether a HYROX is harder than a marathon is in is HYROX hard.
Pick your A race
A peak is built by a taper, and you get one per build. A meta-analysis of 27 tapering studies in competitive athletes found the biggest gain from a taper of about two weeks, with training volume cut by 41 to 60% while intensity and frequency stayed the same. Put two races six weeks apart, take two weeks to recover from the first and two to taper for the second, and two weeks are left to train. That is not a build. It is a long recovery with two races in it.
So one race is your A race and gets the taper. The other is a B race: you race it, but inside a normal training week.
- The A race is the one you would most regret racing tired.
- A B race gets two or three easier days, not two weeks. Race it hard, expect a slower time than a taper would give you, and go back to training once you have recovered.
- A marathon is an expensive B race. You can skip the taper but not the recovery. The muscle damage takes weeks to repair, as the next section shows. A HYROX or a half marathon is a much cheaper B race.
If the races are three months or more apart, there is time to recover, build and taper twice. That is two short seasons, each with its own peak, and the taper guide applies to both. This page is about the closer case.
How far apart the two races should be
It depends on the order, because a marathon costs far more to recover from than a HYROX. The muscle damage takes weeks, not days, to repair. Biopsies from 40 male marathon runners showed fibre damage in the first three days and progressive repair by three to four weeks. In 86 marathon finishers, one blood marker of muscle damage took six days to settle and another eight, and a marker of inflammation was still raised on day eight.
Then add what the second race needs. A HYROX you want to race well after a marathon needs about two weeks of recovery, four or more weeks of station work and compromised running, and a two-week taper: eight weeks. The other gaps follow the same arithmetic.
| First race | Then | Leave at least |
|---|---|---|
| Marathon | A HYROX you want to race well | 8 weeks |
| Marathon | A HYROX as a hard training day | 3 to 4 weeks |
| Half marathon | A HYROX | 3 weeks |
| HYROX | A marathon you want to race well | 5 to 6 weeks |
| Full Ironman | A HYROX | 12 weeks |
| HYROX | A full Ironman | Race it before your Ironman build starts |
The HYROX-first gaps are shorter because a HYROX is 8 km of running, about an hour and a half of racing for the athletes in that study. Leave more if it is your first.
A marathon or half marathon plus HYROX: a season shape
HYROX is the A race, the marathon comes first
- Through the marathon build, keep two short strength sessions a week. The review of distance runners found two to three likely to help their running, and they keep the station loads familiar.
- Race the marathon as your B race: a few easier days before it, not a full taper.
- Recover for about two weeks, in the order set out in the recovery section below.
- Spend four or more weeks on the HYROX block: station work, runs straight off a station, and threshold runs. Your long run can be shorter than in the marathon build; the endurance is already there.
- Taper for about two weeks and race.
The marathon is the A race, HYROX comes first
- Race the HYROX five or six weeks out, before your longest runs. Give it two or three easier days and no taper.
- Take an easy week after it, then go back to the marathon build: long runs and work at marathon pace.
- Keep one or two short strength sessions a week right up to the taper. They help the marathon too.
- Taper for the marathon only.
A half marathon fits almost anywhere
A half is the easiest pairing. Its training, a weekly long run and threshold work, is training a HYROX build needs anyway, and its recovery is counted in days. In a study of 24 male amateur runners, thigh muscles imaged by MRI were back to normal 72 hours after a half for the runners who rested, and slower to recover for those who ran. A half a few weeks before your HYROX makes a good B race and a fitness check, and a HYROX a few weeks before a half costs little. How much running a HYROX build holds is in running for HYROX.
A triathlon or Ironman plus HYROX
The run carries straight over. The bike and the pool build the engine with less pounding than running. On whether endurance work costs you strength, the research has moved: a 2012 meta-analysis of 21 studies found smaller strength and size gains when lifting was paired with running but not cycling, but a 2022 update of 43 studies found no loss of maximal strength or muscle size from either, and no difference between them. Only explosive strength gained less, mostly when both were done in the same session. Swimming trains the least of what the stations ask.
- Sprint and Olympic distance sit easily in a HYROX season as a B race, before or after it. They are far shorter than a marathon: in one study of recreational Ironman finishers, their best Olympic time averaged 130 minutes and their best marathon 194. Start from the half marathon row.
- A 70.3 is a 1.9 km swim, 90 km ride and 21.1 km run. A 2026 review of the 70.3 research reported that most blood values in its studies were back to normal within 48 hours, less disturbance than a full Ironman causes, though the studies were small and mostly of trained men. Plan the gap from the marathon rows, at their shorter end, since its recovery is quicker.
- A full Ironman is always the A race. Its 3.8 km swim, 180 km ride and full marathon took 184 recreational men an average of 691 minutes, about 11.5 hours, on training of 13.9 hours a week. In another study of 42 well-trained male triathletes, markers of muscle damage and inflammation were still raised five days after an Ironman, and most were back to normal by day 19.
A full Ironman build leaves room for one or two short strength and station sessions a week, and no HYROX block. The pairing that works is sequential: race the HYROX before the long Ironman build starts, or twelve weeks or more after the Ironman, once you have recovered and had a block of station work. For a single weekly sport, the running, cycling and swimming crossovers show how each one sits beside HYROX.
Recovering between them
After a marathon, rest beats a recovery run. Of 10 trained male runners followed for a week after a marathon, the ones who rested got their work capacity back by day three. The ones who ran 20 to 45 minutes a day at an easy effort recovered their strength more slowly, and their work capacity was still down at day seven.
Springiness is slow to come back. In 8 elite marathon runners, jump power was still 12% down five days after the race, and burpee broad jumps and wall balls lean on it. So the order back is:
- Walking, and an easy spin or swim if you want to move, for the first three days.
- Short easy runs once stairs feel normal.
- Strength at moderate loads, then your usual easy running.
- Station work, then intervals and runs straight off a station, last.
After a HYROX the same order applies over a shorter time; the days and weeks are in recovering after a HYROX. Pain that is sharp, sits in one spot, makes you limp or has not eased after a week is not race soreness. See a doctor or a physio before the next block.
A second event in Smash Coach
Before you start, write down both dates and decide which race gets the taper.
Smash Coach plans around one race at a time, and HYROX is the competition you can pick today; running races from 5K and 10K to the half and full marathon are coming soon, as are ATHX, DEKA and GYMRACE. A second race has to wait until the first has passed or been removed. Add your HYROX with its date and your coach plans the run-in towards it, with Pro or during your trial, so the app fits the seasons on this page where HYROX is your A race. A marathon or triathlon cannot be picked as a race: your coach plans around its training, not towards its date. More in Races and events.
Your marathon or triathlon training goes in as your own sports. On You, under SPORTS STACK, tap + ADD and pick running, cycling or swimming, then set flexible or fixed days, how often or which days, and how long. Your coach plans around them instead of on top of them. Your coach writes and reworks your plan with Pro or during your trial. See Add a sport or a class.
